Mahama Reaffirms Stance on Family Values, Says He Will Sign Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill if Approved by Parliament

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to what he describes as Ghana’s enduring family and moral values, asserting that gender is determined at birth and that the family remains the bedrock of the nation.

Speaking in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, during a courtesy visit by the Christian Council of Ghana, President Mahama emphasized that his position aligns fully with the Council’s views on family and social values.

“A person’s gender is determined at birth, and the family is the foundation of our nation. That is our position. There are no questions or ambiguities about what we believe,” he stated.

He further noted that his views are consistent with the stance taken by the Christian Council, adding, “I believe we are completely aligned with the Christian Council in terms of your beliefs.”

President Mahama also expressed support for the Speaker of Parliament’s call for the pending bill to be relaid and debated to allow room for any necessary amendments or clarifications.

“We agree with the Speaker to relay the bill and allow Parliament to debate it, and then make any amendments that may be required,” he said.

He stressed that the final decision will reflect the will of Parliament and the people of Ghana.

“If the Parliament of the people of Ghana endorses the bill, votes on it, and passes it, and it comes to me as President, I will sign it,” he declared.
