Mahama Ayariga Calls for Abolition of OSP

Mahama Ayariga Calls

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has urged Parliament to abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and instead empower the Attorney-General’s Office as the sole body responsible for investigating and prosecuting corruption cases in Ghana.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, December 4, Mr. Ayariga questioned the rationale behind underfunding the Attorney-General’s Office while allocating significant resources to the OSP, which he claimed has fallen short of public expectations.

“Look at the budget—why are we not adequately resourcing the Attorney-General? Even after allocating more funding to the OSP than to the Attorney-General, the office is still not delivering results,” he stated. “I strongly believe the OSP should be abolished, whether through a private member’s bill as advised by former Speaker Prof. Mike Oquaye, or by urging the Executive to present a bill for this House to consider and pass.”

He stressed that dissolving the OSP would not hinder efforts to hold corrupt individuals accountable.

“Let me be clear—abolishing the OSP will not allow anyone involved in corruption to escape justice. I will ensure that the process is carried out swiftly,” he added.

The OSP has come under heightened public criticism in recent weeks, particularly following the detention of private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu after a confrontation with security personnel at the institution’s headquarters.
